Every now and then, drivers will need to pass another vehicle on a two-lane highway. While each public road have maximum speed limits, not all drivers will travel at the same speed. Sometimes we come across a slow moving vehicle, such as a farm vehicle, construction vehicle or just someone driving extremely slowly. You may be tempted to overtake and pass a slow moving vehicle when you get directly behind them so knowing how to safely pass another vehicle can help keep everyone safe on the road.

The first rule to consider is to never overtake and pass another vehicle unless you know you can do the maneuver without endangering yourself or others. When you are in doubt, do not pass. Determine if the slow moving vehicle ahead of you is not preparing to make a turn, especially to the left. Pulling out to pass just as they begin making a left turn may cause a collision where personal injuries could be had by the driver of the vehicle that is turning left.

Passing is done mainly on the left lane, while passing on the right lane is allowed only on multi-lane highways and one-way roads. You may also pass using the right lane when overtaking a streetcar or a vehicle that is turning left. Note that passing on the right lane is more dangerous than passing on the left lane.

In situations like driving on the left-most lane with a slow vehicle ahead of you, do not suddenly change lanes to pass him on the right. The danger is the driver in front of you might think you want to pass and may inadvertently move to the right at the exact moment that you do. This may lead to a collision. Wait for him to make his move to the right before you do.
