Consequences of Impaired Driving
As stated earlier, impaired driving has far-reaching consequences. To start with, there are penalties that come with impaired driving. If you are dealing with alcohol impairment, the first offence will come with a $1000 fine and a maximum of ten years of prison. A second offence will attract a prison term ranging from 30 days to 10 years depending on the severity of your case. The third offence will attract prison terms ranging from 120 days to 10 years.
When it comes to drug impairment, the first offense will carry a fine of $1000 fine with a prison term of 10 years. The second offense will mean 30 days to 10 years in prison. The third offense will mean 120 days to 10 years in prison. In some cases, you are going to receive a 7-day vehicle seizure, and you might be required to pay a towing fee. The more severe the accident is, if there is one, the higher the penalties.
Impaired driving could make you lose your driving license
Typically, you are going to lose your license for 90 days. In addition to that, it is possible that you could be jailed in Ontario for impaired driving. A conviction is going to send you to jail.
If asked, you are supposed to be tested for alcohol or drugs concentration. The initial evaluation is done at the roadside, and further testing is done at the police station. Bear in mind that you can be charged due to the refusal to take samples.
Insurance
Different insurance companies in Ontario will have different responses to drinking and driving. Typically, an insurance company will not renew your insurance policy. Therefore, you will be forced to look out for options, and there are not many of them. Even in the case that the insurance company does not cancel your policy, you might be required to pay high insurance rates. Bear in mind that impaired driving is considered an illegal activity, and therefore, your accident is not going to be covered.
Impaired driving could affect your travel
Impaired driving could affect your travel to the US. Moreover, if you engage with some organizations in any capacity, they might ask about your criminal record. Again, your sanctions will include other things such as boats, machinery, and construction equipment.
If you apply for a license again, you will be required to pay $281. If you are found to be at fault in impaired driving in Ontario, your records will be retained for 5 years.
